Tom Nonn Tom Nonn came to the US in 1957 from Hungary after the repression of the uprising there in 1956. Coming from a world of State enforced social realism, he enthusiastically embraced the incredible spirit of freedom which characterized the NY scene.

His works can be best described as "Matter Paintings", he explores surfaces of different materials exposed to various kinds of destructive forces. The materials are mixtures of sand, marble, oxidized copper and powdered pigments that are all prepared by himself. The collages resemble aesthetic transience of earthy elements.

As he says: " In recent years I have incorporated [in my work] more and more themes relating to events affecting our environment such as the destruction of the rain forest, the tragedy of oil spills, chemical urban contamination. (...) There is a contradiction in the work in that physical and chemical processes are allowed to lead to the formation of serendipitous shapes, colors and textures and yet the resulting object must have a structural framework, an evidence of control, without which it cannot be called a work of art."

Tom Nonn's works have been included in many group and solo shows. Selected collections include: New York University, Loeb Center, Lehigh University, Betlehem, PA, University of Wisconsin, Whitewater, City University of New York, North Carolina National Bank, Collection of Armand Erpf. New York, Estate of the honorable Jonathan Bingham and many more.
