Lawrence Calcagno (1913-1993), was born in San Francisco and studied art at the California School of Fine Art, as well as Paris and Florence. Clyfford Still, David Park, Mark Tobey, and Mark Rothko were Calcagno’s contemporaries. He met Beauford Delaney in Paris and continued a close friendship based on their mutual artistic passions until Delaney’s death in 1979.
Calcagno was active in New York and Paris: he was well known in the art world, especially in New York. He had exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout America and Europe. This is mainly an exhibition of paper works that traveled to 5 museum venues in America and to museums in France. Calcagno’s calm, but strong abstract landscapes remind viewers of the horizon at different hours. His meditative touch shows the unique aesthetics that he pursued. We will also have works of his friends in this special exhibition.
The exhibition was displayed at Musee d' Art Americain, Giverny, France in June/July 2003.
