Rene Portocarerro's "History of the Antilles"
These black and white ink drawings by Cuban artist Rene Portocarrero are a set of studies created in 1957 for
his famous ceramic tile mural in the the Las Antillas Bar in the Havana
Hilton. This ten-panel mural, rendered in beige, gold, yellow, brown,
black, blue, and orange depicts the Caribbean legend of the Antilles'
ornamented women and flora. Portocarrero explored this subject again
in a series of pictures exhibited in the XXXIII Venice Biennial. (Please note that this series is sold only as a set.)
