Antoni Tapies was born in Barcelona in 1923. Tapies originally studied law at Barcelona University, but eventually gave this up to devote his life to painting.
Tapies, a self-taught painter and lithographer, is known for his many collage works and graffiti-like paintings, influenced by Surrealists such as Miro and Klee. In the early 1950s, Tapies turned to abstract art and soon afterwards began to use thickly textured impasto, and unusual materials such as clay and marble dust in his work.
. From 1970 onward, Tapies frequently incorporated real objects and pieces of furniture in his works. Tapies has also created many lithographs and etchings. Although there may be differences between his paintings and his prints, Tapies has said regarding his work as a printmaker, "I approach all of my work with the same spirit."
In 1958, Tapies was awarded the First Prize for painting at the Pittsburgh International, and was given the UNESCO and David E. Bright Prizes at the Venice Biennale. He lives and works in his native Barcelona.
